The Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF) is an image of a small region of space in the constellation Fornax. The picture was composited from data taken from the Hubble Space Telescope, in 2003 and 2004. It is the deepest image of the universe ever taken. HUDF was captured in a section of the sky with a low density of bright stars, which allowed for better viewing of dimmer, more distant objects. It has been estimated that the HUDF photograph shows 10,000 galaxies. This is what happened when the Hubble Telescope stared at a section of the dark night sky for 11 days. The area you see is one thirteen-millionth of the total sky. In that tiny bit of the heavens you're looking at, we found over 10,000 galaxies. Each galaxy has between ten million and 100 trillion stars. However small you think you are, you cannot imagine how much smaller you actually are. This is what happened when the Hubble Telescope stared at a section of the dark night sky for 11 days. The Cosmic Butterfly Credit: NASA The Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), a new camera aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, snapped this image of the planetary nebula, catalogued as NGC 6302, but more popularly called the Bug Nebula or the Butterfly Nebula. WFC3 was installed by NASA astronauts in May 2009, during the servicing mission to upgrade and repair the then 19-year-old Hubble telescope. This image of Caldwell 33 and 34, known collectively as the Veil Nebula, demonstrates Hubble's high resolution but small field of view. The large image was taken by a ground-based telescope, while the three insets are Hubble close-up views. (Credits: NASA, ESA, the Hubble Heritage (STScI/AURA)-ESA/Hubble Collaboration, and the Digitized Sky Survey 2; J. Hester (Arizona State University), Davide De Martin (ESA/Hubble)) This image of Caldwell 33 and 34, known collectively as the Veil Nebula, demonstrates Hubble's high resolution but small field of view. This is the Hubble deep field image. This is a blip in the sky where the Hubble telescope didn't see any stars. Everything you see in this image is a galaxy. Astronomy is a huge hobby of mine; I volunteer at the Chico Observatory as often as I can. Some people look at the stars and feel infinitely small, and that makes them feel insignificant. An accident in the mess of space, others look at the stars and know exactly how important we are. This is the Hubble deep field image.
